Hey, I’m Brendon Connelly, the chief envelope stuffer here at BatteryHeroes.com. I was born with bilateral (both sides) microsia and atresia (and a cleft palate…technically all this stuff is rolled up into Treacher Collins Syndrome), and was fitted with my first hearing aid when I was 2 years old, way back in 1969. When I was a kid, my parents always made sure I had batteries in my hearing aid, but when I went away to college I sometimes found myself scrambling for spare change so I could buy new batteries. I also saved old batteries because I learned that in a pinch I could re-use them and squeeze out another few hours of hearing. Does that sound familiar to you? 🙂
Once I got through college and could better afford to buy my own batteries, I developed a “batteries everywhere” philosophy. I wanted batteries everywhere I thought I might need them: home, office, car, friends cars. You get the idea. I just really do not enjoy losing my hearing due to lack of batteries. In order to have batteries everywhere, I bought batteries in bulk–60 at a time! Since the batteries generally lasted 7 days or so, it took a long time to get through ten packs of batteries. And invariably I’d lose some packs, or the hearing aid batteries would lose their original power as they aged beyond their shelf life. I began to wish I could just have smaller quantities of fresh batteries delivered to me, but nobody did that. I figured I couldn’t be the only person who felt this way, and thus was born BatteryHeroes.com.
The hearing aids I used for years and years were the classic bone conductor on a band. In my case the air unit was on the right side of my head and the bone conductor unit was on the left side. That meant sound would come into the unit on the right, but I’d hear it on the left, and I effectively had single-sided hearing. Back in November of 2011 I had surgery for bilateral bone anchored hearing aids (BAHA). After three months of healing, I was fitted for the BAHA units, and I haven’t looked back. They are awesome, and if you ask me about them I will talk your ear (or hearing aid) off.
BatteryHeroes.com is a small family business. My kids help pack your batteries, carefully and securely. They make a few bucks helping dad, and we get to spend time together which I appreciate. I hope our little service helps you, too.
